Chapter Spotlight: Syracuse University
Check out this insightful piece from Syracuse on their relationship with their Partner, GHNU!
The Syracuse University Chapter is currently underway working with Global Health Network Uganda (GHNU) for the third year. We are honored to work with this extraordinary organization again, and are looking forward to building our relationship even further. Over the past two years we have worked with GHNU to support communities in the rural Oyam District, located in Northern Uganda. By continuing this partnership we have been able to create strong relationships with the community members and build a sense of trust. Unfortunately, there are many organizations that make promises when doing developmental work, but they never follow through with these promises. Our chapter saw this first hand when community members were skeptical of the promises we made related to the projects we planned to implement, and it was our number one priority to see our projects through for the benefit of the communities. As representatives of Nourish International, it was important to us to make sure that the organization stood out in the minds of the community members, and that we could build trust based upon actions rather than empty promises that they have encountered in the past. We have made the decision to continue our partnership because there are still many projects we can work on with GHNU to benefit the people in the Oyam District, and we value the continuation of building our relationship with the people at GHNU. The way we see it is why ruin the great thing we have going, especially we can continue to work together to help improve the livelihoods of the Oyam people? The dedication and focus on sense of community, along Nourish’s values, has helped us create a strong bond with our GHNU, and we keep open communication throughout the year providing updates on what each other are doing. By giving updates on ventures and weekly meetings, and receiving information on people in the communities, or the work in progress of our partner, it keeps our bond strong even when we are on thousands of mile apart.
In regards to our Intern team, we feel that it is critical they create this bond early on not only with the partner, but with each other as well. This year, we have already been able to form our team of interns, which will allow us to hit the ground running with training in the spring. We are planning multiple social events in order to get the team closer, and also so that they have the chance to interact with past interns to learn more about what the process is like to be a Nourish International Intern. Another thing we are excited about this year is that we are planning on setting up a Skype call between our intern team and our partner, GHNU. This will allow interns and GHNU staff to have an interaction before they meet in the project country, and begin forming bonds early on. It will not only be exciting for interns and GHNU, but it will help create a stronger sense of commitment and desire to strive to do everything they can to make sure the projects and experience in general is successful for everyone.
As a chapter, we feel that building strong relationships is at the foundation of so much of what we do, and encourage everyone to do anything in their power to create strong relationships not only with their partner, but within their chapter as well. Nourish is not like any other organization. The values, mission, approach and people set it apart from other organizations that have similar interests. Being a part of Nourish International is an honor, and rather than having fellow members you become part of a family. Building these relationships instills this sense of family and commitment to one another, and we wouldn’t have in any other way! #Nourish Love
