Weekly chapter spotlight: University of Pittsburgh

This week, we hear from the Pitt Chapter's Linda Sun and Emily Hwang as they share the ideas they have developed for contributing to their partner, Maya traditions, and for integrating this connection into their Ventures strategy.
Linda (Project Intern from 2014):
"When we arrived at Maya Traditions, we noticed there was a lot of leftover fabric that was in storage and Maya Traditions wasn't sure what to do with it.  We thought of a resourceful way to make profit from it and also to bring more awareness to Maya Traditions and what it does.

There were a lot of scraps leftover from different products [the women in the community] were making so the [Nourish team] organized the scraps and figured out the dimensions for [using them to make] headbands.  Then they sent it to a tailor to hem the fabric.  [The idea] was really low risk and it didn't cost that much to hem the fabric pieces.

The [Nourish team then] started making the headbands [in Guatemala] and brought them back [to Pittsburgh to sell as a Venture].  It was a very cool process because it was a  random idea during our 6 weeks there, but it worked out in the end because [our Chapter sold the headbands] to fundraise for the next [year of the] Project.  People really enjoy wearing the [headbands and the fact that the products are] from Guatemala and that the interns made them directly."

Emily (Project Intern from 2015):
"This year we went back with the intention to do this again... We brought the fabric back [to Pitt] this year to have our members make [the headbands].  We have already made more than $200 in profit from selling the headbands [this fall] and we have another sale coming up!"
See below the announcements section for a photo of the headbands!
